The recent weeks of snowy weather and sub-freezing temperatures have been a particular delight for Prospect Park's Merfolk, with the surface of the lake not only frozen over but covered with snow.

"It's so rare these days," said Du'eria Ellsanatiaria, Matriarch of the Lakegrass Clan. "We used to be able to rely on the winter to bring us some respite from the prying eyes at the surface."

"They finally have a week or two where they can just be themselves down there," explained Kai Opunui, Prospect Park Director of Aquatic Community Relations. "We're not sure how exactly they make use of this privacy, but from what I hear—man, it's quite a party."

The Merfolk birthrate is known to increase significantly after these periods.

While it's not uncommon for the lake to freeze over, as Opunui points out, "Without snow, the ice is just a big window. Like living in that building across from the Brooklyn Library."

Du'eria Ellsanatiaria couldn't agree more.

"The ducks," she says. "The ducks are the worst."
